Chapter 8

We're in chapter 8 in the Chinese book. Chapter 8 is all about family. We learned kinship terms. We did a project talking about our families- how many people, how many siblings, where we are in the birth order, what everyone does, what everyone likes. For the last sentence of the project, she wants us to say (in Chinese) "I like/love my family because..."

We turned in the rough draft on Monday, and the best I could come up with was "because they're my family."

We've also had to listen to these songs. First it was the sweet little ditty featuring a "daughter," "mother," and "father" singing about all the sweet little things that family means to each of them in turn. Oh, and I forgot the baby brother who gurgles a bit. They're all so loving and... sweet. It made me so mad.

Tonight's song was for Mothers' Day. Verse one compared Mother to the moon, verse two to the stars. It was all about how much the two kids singing it were loved by their mom. Then, teacher lectured us about our mothers. Then we had to make cards.

*sigh*

I made a card for Grandma.

This has not been a pleasant chapter or day. I nearly called Counselor after class.

I don't like me like this.

Sounds like the teacher is oblivious to some families who might not function with sweetness or love...chalk it up to lack of sensitivity? But I'm glad you had a decent grandma.

sigh. My kids run into this too. which daddy gets the mother's day card? it's naivete at best, social control at worst. sorry, spidey. just remember that all spiders deserve to be loved by their families. it's not the spider's fault the grown-ups were mean.
